African Heritage Month - In 1852, William Hall joined the British Navy. He went on to serve with distinction for 21 years. Hall was awarded medals for his active service. He is also credited with saving a sailor from drowning in the Ganges River when he was stationed in India. While in India, Hall and his fellow sailors were sent on a mission to rescue a British garrison under siege in the City of Lucknow. On November 16, 1857, Hall was awarded the Victoria Cross for "gallant conduct" at the battle of Lucknow. He was the first person of African ancestry , the first Nova Scotian, and the first for his great bravery in combat. William Hall is one of Canada's greatest war heroes. He is designated a Person of National Historic Significance, there is a monument to him near his home in Hantsport and he has a commemorative stamp issued in his honour. A branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, a highway, a gymnasium in Cornwallis, an Educational Centre for Aprican Canadian students in Montreal and a Navy Ship, HMCS William Hall, are all named in his honour. On Heritage Day, February 19, 2024, we celebrated his life journey and legacy.
Happy birthday to Clare, Abigail, Nathan and Jo.
