Thank you to everyone who wore an orange shirt today. The orange shirt is a
symbol of solidarity and an active part of reconciliation. We wear the orange shirts for
Orange Shirt Day, which aligns with Truth and Reconciliation day as a way to honour
the survivors and the children who never returned from the Canadian Indian Residential
School System. The Orange Shirt comes to us from the story of one of these children,
Phyllis Webstad. In 1973 when Phyllis was just six years old, she wore a new orange
shirt on her first day at Residential school. It was very special to her because it was a
gift from her grandmother and she did not often receive new things. She attended St.
Joseph’s Mission Indian Residential School in British Columbia and on her very first day
they took away all of her things, including the orange shirt. This was just the beginning
of a horrible chapter in her life in this system.
Truth and Reconciliation Day, which is recognized every September 30th in
Canada, is a day for Canadians to face the truth of what happened, for survivors and
those who never came home to have their stories told, and to create a historic record of
these injustices. When we face the truth we can begin the process of reconciliation
where we repair the damages of the past to create a better future for all of us. I hope
that you will use the day to reflect on the past and take action to be part of a brighter
future.

Happy birthday to Paisley, Rory, Patrick, Landen, Elliott, Hudson, Karter, Ruari, DJ, Cassie and Paisley.

Have a great Friday and long weekend!
