African Heritage Month - Reverend Richard Preston became one of the most important church and community leaders in Nova Scotia.  Preston escaped slavery and came to Nova Scotia in search of his mother in 1816.  He found his mother living on Upper Partridge River in East Preston.  He was so grateful to find his mother that he took the name of the community as his own last name.  In 1830, the black community raised money to send Richard Preston to England to be ordained. He returned to Nova Scotia as an ordained Minister with money that he raised for a new church.  The new church was built on Cornwallis Street. Affectionately called "Father Preston" by his congregation and he was active in the movement to abolish slavery.  He was a leading figure in helping to set up 11 Baptist churches in Nova Scotia.  One of his greatest accomplishments was the creation of the African United Baptist Association in 1854.

Happy birthday to Finley.  Have a great Monday!
