African Heritage Month - Dr. Clement Ligoure was originally from Trinidad.  He graduated in 1916 with a medical degree from Queen's University , in Kingston Ontario.  Dr. Clement Ligoure became the first black Doctor in Nova Scotia.  He would later become editor of Nova Scotia's first Black Newspaper, the Atlantic Advocate.  After Dr. Ligoure was denied hospital privileges, he established a private clinic inside his home in the North end of Halifax and he named it Amanda Private Hospital after his mother.  On December 6, 1917, Halifax Explosion occurred killing almost 2,000 people and injuring another 9,000.  In the weeks that followed, Dr. Ligoure worked day and night at his clinic and in the city's devastated streets, treating hundreds of blast victims for free.  In May, 2022, Halifax Regional Council has voted to register as a heritage property the former home of Dr. Clement Ligoure, the first Black Doctor in Nova Scotia and unsung hero of the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

Happy birthday to Xander.

Have a great Thursday!
