African Heritage Month - During the 1700's, the Jamaican Maroons were determined as freedom fighters in Jamaica. They fought against the British Administration for their independence. In 1795, the administration in Jamaica decided to remove the Maroons. Three ships brought 543 men, women and children to Halifax in late June 1796. Some of the maroons joined Nova Scotia militia units and worked on building projects such as the third Halifax Citadel and Government House. Due to severe winter weather and other reasons, the majority of the Maroons left Nova Scotia and travelled to Sierra Leone in Africa. In 1817, there were a few who remained in the Black community of Tracadie in Guysborough which revealed that several persons living there were descendants of the Maroons. The Maroons also left descendants in the Preston Area of Halifax County.
Have a great Wednesday!
