African Heritage Month - In 1946, Dr. Carrie Best began publication of the Clarion. The Clarion was Nova Scotian's first black newspaper. She also created a radio show program called The Quiet Corner, which aired for 12 years on four radio stations throughout the Maritime Provinces. During her lifetime, she earned awards such as Honorary Doctor of Laws, Queen Elizabeth Medal, Honorary Doctor of Civil Law, African Baptist Association Award, Harry Jerome Award, etc. Dr. Carrie Best was a poet, author, journalist and human rights activist. She was an Officer in the Order of Canada in 1979. In February 2011, Canada Post released a stamp to celebrate the remarkable story of Dr. Carrie Best. She became the first posthumous recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia. The Dr. Carrie Best Scholarhsip valued at $20,000 is available at the University of King's College.
